Prints photo ID cards on plastic
An ID card printer prints a photo, name and often a barcode or QR code directly onto a plastic card, rather than a paper badge. A school, workplace or membership organisation issuing its own ID cards needs one, especially for a bulk print run at the start of a term or year. Start by checking whether it prints one side or both, and how many cards it can print before a refill.

How to choose one
Single or dual-sided
A single-sided printer covers a basic photo card; dual-sided printing adds a second side, useful for extra details or a barcode on the back.
Print resolution
A higher resolution gives a sharper photo and smaller text, which matters more for a card with a lot of printed detail.
Card capacity and feed
Check the input and output hopper sizes against how many cards are printed in one run, such as a whole new class or intake.
Encoding
Some printers can also encode a magnetic stripe or a chip, needed only if the card doubles as an access or payment card.
Ribbon type
A monochrome ribbon is cheaper for a plain ID card; a full-colour ribbon costs more but prints a photo in colour.
With the software

About id card printers
Can I design and print ID cards in the software today?
Not yet: bulk ID card design and printing is planned for a later build step.
Can it print a barcode or QR code on the card?
That's part of the planned ID card feature; the printer itself can print whatever is in the design, including a barcode or QR code.
How many cards can I print in one run?
That depends on the model's input hopper size; check the maker's own capacity for a given printer.
Do I need a dual-sided printer?
Only if the card needs printed detail on both sides; a single-sided printer is enough for a plain front-only ID card.
