Hardware

The rolls and ribbons printers use up

Paper and labels are the thermal paper rolls, label rolls and ribbons a receipt or label printer consumes and needs restocking. Every till or label printer needs a supply that fits it, since running out mid-sale stops printing until it's replaced. Start by checking the roll width and length the printer takes, and whether the printer needs direct thermal paper or a ribbon.

How to choose one

Roll width

Match the roll width to the printer, most commonly 80mm or 58mm for receipts and a range of narrower widths for labels.

Direct thermal or ribbon

A direct thermal printer only needs plain thermal paper; a thermal-transfer label printer also needs a matching ribbon.

Roll diameter and core size

Check the roll's outer diameter and core size fit the printer's roll holder, since an oversized roll simply won't close the lid.

Fade resistance

A receipt printed on cheap thermal paper can fade within months; a label meant to stay readable longer needs a better-quality stock.

With the software

Does it work with BixiCash?

Paper and label rolls work entirely on their own; any roll matching the printer's width, core size and paper type will do, whatever till software is running.

Straight answers

About paper and labels

Does the paper need to be a specific brand?

No: any roll matching the printer's width, core size and paper type works, regardless of software.

Direct thermal or ribbon, which do I need?

That depends on the printer, not the till software: a direct thermal printer only takes plain thermal paper, a thermal-transfer printer also needs a ribbon.

Why did my receipt fade over time?

Thermal paper fades with heat, light and age; a better-quality stock keeps a receipt readable for longer.

Can I use the same roll for receipts and labels?

Only if the width and stock type match both the printer and the job; most shops keep separate receipt and label rolls.
