Hardware

Keeps the till running through a power cut

A UPS (uninterruptible power supply) holds enough charge to keep a till PC, printer or network router running for a while after the mains goes out. Any counter in an area with frequent power cuts or load-shedding benefits from one, so a sale in progress isn't lost. Start by checking its capacity against what it needs to power, and how many minutes of backup that gives.

Before you buy

How to choose one

Capacity

A higher capacity, usually shown in VA or watts, backs up more devices or the same devices for longer; check it against the till, printer and router combined.

Backup time

Backup time falls as load rises, so check the runtime at the load actually being powered, not just the headline capacity figure.

Number of outlets

Check there are enough battery-backed outlets for everything that needs to stay on, such as the till PC, the router and the printer.

Recharge time

In an area with frequent short cuts, a UPS that recharges quickly between cuts keeps more of its capacity ready for the next one.

With the software

Does it work with BixiCash?

A UPS works entirely on its own, keeping the till PC, printer and network powered through a mains cut; it has no link to the till software at all.

Straight answers

About power backup

Does the UPS connect to the till software?

No: it just keeps the power on; the till software has no link to it at all.

How long will it keep the till running?

That depends on the UPS's capacity and how much it's powering; check the runtime figure at the actual load, not just the top capacity number.

Do I need one if the internet drops but power stays on?

No: a UPS is for a power cut. A separate planned LAN hub is what keeps a till selling through an internet outage.

What should I plug into it?

Typically the till PC, the printer and the network router or modem, so the whole counter stays working, not just the screen.
