Reads a barcode straight into the sale

A barcode scanner reads a printed barcode and types the code into whatever field has focus, just like a keyboard. Any counter that sells items by SKU needs one, from a small shop to a busy supermarket. Start by checking whether it reads 1D barcodes only or also 2D codes and QR, and how it connects to the till.

How to choose one

Scan type

A 1D scanner reads ordinary barcodes; a 2D (imager) scanner also reads QR codes and damaged or screen-shown barcodes, so it suits a wider range of goods.

Connection

A USB corded scanner is the simplest and cheapest; a wireless or Bluetooth scanner suits a counter where the operator moves around the item, such as a bulky product.

Keyboard-wedge behaviour

Most scanners act as a keyboard, sending the code as typed characters ending in Enter, so they work with the till without any driver install.

Read range

A close-range scanner suits a fixed counter; a longer-range or presentation scanner suits a busy lane where items pass by rather than being held up to it.

Durability

A drop rating and a dust or splash rating matter more in a warehouse, workshop or wet counter than on a quiet retail till.

With the software

Does it work with BixiCash?

Our demo till adds a line to the sale by scanning a barcode; scanning from any screen and phone-camera scanning are still being built.

About barcode scanners

Does the scanner need its own software?

No: it types the barcode like a keyboard, so it works with the till the moment it's plugged in or paired.

Can it read a barcode shown on a phone screen?

A 2D imager scanner can read a screen-shown barcode; a basic 1D laser scanner usually can't.

Will it work with a weighing-scale label?

Yes for the scan itself; parsing the weight or price out of that barcode is still a planned feature of the till.

Do you test specific scanner models?

We only badge a model 'Tested with BixiCash' once we've actually tried it, and that tested list is still being built.
