Opens to hold and protect the day's cash

A cash drawer holds notes and coins at the counter, locked shut except when a sale or an authorised no-sale opens it. Any till taking cash payments needs one, whether under the counter or built into a terminal stand. Start by checking the drawer's width against the counter space and how it's triggered to open.

How to choose one

Width

A common counter width holds a full day's float comfortably; a narrower drawer suits a tight counter or a mobile setup.

Trigger connection

Most drawers open through the receipt printer's own drawer port on a print or a direct pulse; check the drawer's connector matches the printer it will be paired with.

Compartments

More note and coin slots make it easier to keep denominations separated and to count the float quickly at open and close.

Lock

A physical key lock lets the drawer be locked shut outside trading hours, separate from however it's triggered open during a sale.

Mounting

Check whether it sits free on the counter or needs to be bolted underneath, depending on the counter's own design.

With the software

Does it work with BixiCash?

Planned: an automatic drawer pulse on cash sales and no-sales once the Windows till ships; today a browser till opens the drawer by key, not automatically.

About cash drawers

Does the drawer open automatically on a cash sale?

Not yet on the web till: it opens where the printer driver triggers it on print; automatic pulsing on cash sales and no-sales is planned for the Windows till.

Can I open the drawer without a sale?

A no-sale is recorded and counted on the Z report; on the web till the drawer itself is opened by key rather than a pulse.

Does the drawer need its own power?

No: it's triggered by the printer or till, not powered separately.

What stops staff opening the drawer without a reason?

Every no-sale is a capability-gated action that's recorded and shows on the Z report, so it isn't a silent opening.
